Graphite, a form of pure carbon can either be a lubricant ( as in dry graphite to lubricate lock tumblers, pins , and internal parts (micro pulverized into minute micron size), or an abrasive in larger size.

Results have been quite uniform, gas mileage increased by 7-10%, oil temps decreased by 5-8 degrees, starting will be bit quicker, and engine noise will be reduced, (ymmv). I tried it in a dodge 360 but had to take it out because one guide leaked enough that it fouled the plug. That graphite is a conductor and does not burn off once the plug is fouled.
