Histopathologically, the crystalline corneal opacities corresponded with dense accumulations of bacteria present in the interlamellar stromal spaces and forming cord-like projections within the stroma. WebHistopathologically, crystalline keratopathy is characterized by dense gram-positive bacterial colonies in the corneal interlamellar spaces with a pronounced absence of surrounding inflammation (Fig. 21.16A and B). It is thought that the bacteria are sequestered by a polysaccharide-rich glycocalyx consistent with a biofilm.
